Ban ALL Cross Burnings in North Carolina

Flyers advertising a Cross “Lighting” in Harmony, NC are being found on lawns in the state's Piedmont area and include contact info for The Loyal White Knights of the KKK, based in Eden.

If you call, you’ll get a message about LWK’s concern over extinction of the “white” race and its goal to “keep all races separate,” an invitation to leave your number to get the location of the Harmony event and a final word, “If it ain’t white, it ain’t right.”

Only “whites” are invited--and only certain whites, at that, since LWK makes it clear it’s opposed to homosexuality, among other things. It’s not about hate, it insists - just separation. Clearly, the LWK will not be swayed by the ethical dubiousness of cross burning. But what about legality?

Although cross burning was banned in 2007, there are loopholes. But there’s no excuse or circumstance that would justify an event that symbolizes such unspeakable violence and hatred, and the law should be all-inclusive.

Tell NC to ban ALL cross burnings!

We, the undersigned, ask the state to enact stricter laws against cross burning.

As written, the law allows some loopholes and does not sufficiently put an end to a practice that historically symbolizes unspeakable acts of savagery and ideology of hatred and racism. When CBS reported in 2009 that the Supreme Court upheld states’ rights to ban cross burning, legal analyst  Andrew Cohen explained that "The justices in the majority made it clear that they came down the way they did because cross-burning is such an historically heinous act — and that's a test that won't apply to most symbolic speech cases in the future."

Most citizens in this state abhor this practice and all it represents, and we call on the legislature to end it, in all its forms, forever.

We ask that, without further delay, the legislature and/or governor ban all cross burnings in North Carolina, and thank you for your attention to the serious matter.
