Designate River Nairn Area As Wildlife Sanctuary / Haven

  • by: Joseph Telfer
  • recipient: Laurie Fraser. Provost and Nairn Highland Regional Councillor for the Common Good

The Tidal area of the river Nairn is home to over 200 water birds, Mainly Swans and Ducks. They need a safe area free from fishing tackle injuries, dog attacks and disturbance from human water sport activities. People get a huge amount of pleasure from the existence of these birds on the river. They are also a big attraction to the tourists who visit Nairn. The Local Council has the Power as Riparian owners to designate the Area from the A96 road bridge downstream to the Bailey bridge as a safe area where the wildlife get priority status. The Swans Island in this area has produced 62 cygnets in the past 9 years. The River Nairn Swans and Waterfowl Trust has 170 members and looks after the welfare of these birds all year round, it has spent £11000 feeding and caring for them over the past 4 years. The Trust is a voluntary group and receives no funding from government. The Trust also monitors and reports pollution incidents and clears up litter regularly. The health of the river and it's environment is important to all the wildlife and people who wish to use the beaches and sea. Please sign the Petition for the welfare of the birds, our environment and the Common Good of all.

We the undersigned want a designated safe Wildlife area on the River Nairn from the A96 road bridge to the bailey bridge where the waterfowl get priority status. We consider this to be for the common good of all, and a beneficial asset to Nairn. We want the riparian owners Highland council and our local common good councillors to declare this a wildlife area and for it to be fully respected as such.

Thank you for signing the petition, I have just changed the Photo to show that all is not sweetness and light all the time, and there are real dangers for the wildlife.
