Loyal librarian's touching donation should go to scholastics, not football scoreboard

For decades, Robert Morin catalogued the contents of the University of New Hampshire's library.

And, as colon cancer slowly overtook him, Morin reassured colleagues that the library would have the funding it needed. Morin had lived frugally, saving enough money so that $4 million would be donated to the university after he died.

Shockingly — rather than investing Mr. Morin's bequest into his beloved library — the University of New Hampshire spent $1 million on a video scoreboard for its football team.

The university's decision to prioritize sports over scholarship is a sickening and cynical betrayal of Mr. Morin's loyalty to the school and concern for the intellectual pursuits of its students.

And while UNH has already purchased its ludicrous scoreboard with Mr. Morin's bequest, it’s not too late for the school to make things right. Please sign this petition to urge UNH President Mark W. Huddleston to immediately:

  • Issue a public apology for the misuse of Mr. Morin's bequest; and
  • Require that the athletics department repay the library the $1 million the university spent on the football team's video scoreboard for its football team.
  • Ensure that at least 95 percent of Mr. Morin's total bequest be directed to academic programs and resources.

Your signature today will help us pressure the university to honor Mr. Morin's life and legacy and make a powerful statement about the importance of prioritizing academics of athletics on college campuses.

We can win this fight. Please add your name now!
