Save Gus Wortham Park / Golf Course

Gus Wortham is Texas and Houston's oldest 18 hole Golf Course, and Texas Second oldest golf course! Currently Gus Wortham is under threat from Jeff Ross, President of the Houston Botanic Garden. Mr. Ross wishes, on behalf of Houston Botanic Garden, to procure over half the acreage of Gus Wortham Park Golf Course to erect a Botanical Garden. By reducing the acreage of this Historic site by over half would make it very difficult for the Historic Golf Course to remain profitable. Mr. Ross wishes to build his garden at Gus Wortham to take advantage of the light rail currently being constructed by Metro.  This very same light rail would make Gus Wortham Park Golf Course more accessible and bring more revenue to the club via expanding accessibility.  The beginnings of this historic golf club dates back to 1908 when Tom MacNamara and Willie Maguire were among the first resident professionals at the the original Houston Country Club, now known as Gus Wortham Park Golf Course.  The family names of Houston's founding fathers and history, along with famous golfers are associated to this muni.  Wortham Park Friends is seeking conservancy and historical preservation status for Gus Wortham Park Golf Course.  Please sign our petition and help preserve the past to protect the future of 107 year old historic Gus Wortham Park Golf Course, an environmental wildlife greenspace.

Gus Wortham is an historic site and is rich in history.  Many of Houston’s elite have played at Gus Wortham and lived in its nearby neighborhoods.  Throughout history, many famous golfers and tournaments have played and been played at Gus Wortham.

By signing this petition you will show the city the importance and value of this historical site and green space to the community and the City of Houston.  This petition will be presented to the Houston City Council to make the City once again aware of the importance of this Historical site.  We need many signatures to stop this encroachment onto Houston’s diverse history.

Thank You
