OPEN BORDERS FOR TRANSPORTS OF ADOPTED PETS

Parallel to the human tragedies, another tragedy unfolds that many of you may not be aware of. It affects thousands of animals, among them the most vulnerable. Thousands of animals are stuck in shelters and animal rescues all over Europe, from Greece to the Ukraine. They have been adopted in other countries, such as Germany, the UK, France, Austria etc and their families are waiting for them but due to the terrible COVD-19 pandemic and the lockdown they cannot leave and join them.
The situation in these shelters and rescues is dire: food supplies are low or completely empty. Food can no longer be bought locally, the import of pet food has stopped almost completely; help from supporters locally and abroad has dwindled due to economic hardships. In addition, this situation is made worse as more and more animals are abandoned due to the unfounded belief (read the declaration by WHO and other countries Health agencies). More and more starving and injured animals need to be rescued, fed and treated and at the same time no adoptions can take place to make room for them. This causes an infernal spiral of hunger and despair for the animals and for the rescues who often give their last to save these animals. If adopted animals cannot leave, no more animals can be rescued. They will die of hunger and injuries. Animals in rescues and shelters may have to be put out in the streets again for lack of the essential to feed them.
I have been involved in animal rescue for over 30 years. I have rescued and adopted many animals myself. I am in close contact and supporting several animal rescues in Bosnia, Romania and Egypt. I see their appeals, hear directly from my rescue friends every day.
I believe that it is crucial that these dogs and cats can leave and join their adopters in order to avoid a total catastrophe of animal suffering. This pandemic is a test on mankind and how we deal with it, with each other and with nature around us shows who and what we are.
In the name of humaneness and compassion, I ask the governments of all European countries to give permission to organised transports of these dogs and cats from their shelters and animal associations to cross the borders to join their adopters.
