Stop Pepco Substation!

Tell Pepco No Substation Here!

We oppose the construction of a Pepco substation at the Mt. Vernon location. This construction will jeopardize the health of the residents surrounding the site while also being negative infrastructural development on the block.

Issue #1.

Restaurants. Gyms. Stores. Offices .
While the rest of K street is receiving this positive development contributing to the economic and social infrastructure of K street, our block has been chosen to host a building that at best is passive dead space. Surrounded by mixed-income, senior housing, and a public elementary school, this contributes to historical infrastructural discrimination that our communities always face. Infrastructural justice on the part of corporations requires not simply going with the cheapest lot available. This is injustice.

Issue #2.
The substation could jeopardize the health of the residents surrounding the site, particularly the children and elderly residents. The substation emits electromagnetic fields known as EMF's. While some scientific studies say that there are "safe" levels of exposure, the World Health Organization (WHO) admits "Gaps in knowledge about biological effects exist and need further research." They also mention that
"A number of epidemiological studies suggest small increases in risk of childhood leukemia with exposure to low-frequency magnetic fields in the home...Large-scale studies are currently underway in several countries and may help resolve these issues (WHO 2018). We will not allow our community to be part of this "gap in knowledge."
