Stop a commercial kangaroo industry in Victoria

The Municipal Association of Victoria wants to introduce a commercial kangaroo processing industry in Victoria.

Landowners are legally allowed to "manage" their numbers, with the issue of ATCW lethal permits, and instead of leaving the dead kangaroos on the ground to  be "wasted", they want to start a commercial kangaroo meat industry.

This is an initiative of the Grampians Shire, where there is a National Park.

Kangaroos are natural grassland managers. With good rainfalls they keep grasses grazed, and lower, fire risks. Only 5% of native vegetation remains in Victoria, and there are limited areas for free-ranging wildlife. Kangaroos are fugitives in their own land. They face a daily struggle of survival as starvation, fire, drought and habitat loss threaten their genetic integrity and decimate local populations, leaving joeys orphaned.

Once the industry starts, there will be orders to fill, and the animals will be slaughtered to fulfil demands.

We want to petition the State government to protect our native kangaroos, and the justification of their killing for a commercial industry.  This idea was rejected in the past as being unsustainable, and continues to be so.

Please sign this petition to protect kangaroos in Victoria from a commercial slaughter industry.

The Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) issue Authority To Control Wildlife (ATCW) permits which accounts for the slaughter of tens of thousands of Kangaroos each year in Victoria.  The Municipal Association of Victoria wants to introduce a commercial kangaroo processing industry in the State, instead of allowing the dead kangaroos left on the ground and be "wasted".
