Daily Mail: Take Sexism Seriously and Apologize for ‘Legs-It’ Headline

A recent Daily Mail cover featured a photo of Nicola Sturgeon and Theresa May with the sexist headline: “Never mind Brexit, who won Legs-it!” The front page caused widespread outrage among readers, with many taking to social media to vent their frustrations. Still, the Daily Mail defended its headline, even telling critics they should “get a life.”

Sign this petition demanding that the Daily Mail apologize for the sexist cover and focus on important issues rather than women’s bodies.

The British prime minister and the Scottish first minister were meeting to discuss whether Britain’s departure from the European Union would cause Scotland to leave the United Kingdom. Rather than reporting on this consequential event, the British tabloid reduced the meeting to a comparison of the two leaders’ bodies. As former Labour leader Ed Miliband tweeted: “The 1950s called and asked for their headline back.”

The Daily Mail has a history of commenting on female politician’s bodies, which must stop now. In a time of political unrest around the world, where women are constantly objectified and treated unequally, there’s no place for this blatantly sexist treatment of our female world leaders in our newspapers, whether they’re tabloids or not.

If the Daily Mail is going to cover important issues facing our world, it must do a better job. Please sign this petition asking the Daily Mail to stop perpetuating sexism by apologizing for this cover and by committing itself against sexist news coverage in the future.
