He Saved 20 Students from the Parkland Shooter. Give Anthony Borges the Gov's Medal of Freedom.

Fifteen-year-old Anthony Borges didn't want to be a hero, but on February 14th, 2018 that is just what he became.

That was the day that Nicolas Cruz, a 19-year-old young man, walked into his former high school and took the lives of 17 men and women with an AR-15.

But when 20 of his other classmates took cover from the shooter in a classroom Anthony stood in the doorway, blocking the onslaught of bullets from the gunman's automatic weapon. His bravery saved their lives. Not a single one of the other students was hurt. But Borges was shot several times and he is currently being treated for his injuries in stable condition.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel has already commended Mr. Borges. In a heart-wrenching photo, you can see the two men holding hands as Sheriff Israel comforts and thanks him for his bravery.

But where are Gov. Rick Scott or Senator Marco Rubio? These two men, perhaps more than many others, are responsible for Florida's lax and ludicrous gun laws. And now that this young man has nearly died saving others due to these laws they have yet to even recognize his bravery.

There is one thing Gov. Scott can do to thank Mr. Borges for the hero he is. He can award him with the state's Governor's Medal of Freedom. The medal is given by the governor to "those civilians who have made a meritorious contribution to the security of our nation or the state of Florida."  Anthony Borges did that and much more. He risked sacrificing his own life to save the lives of others.  And Gov. Scott should recognize that.

This isn't just a hopeful ask, some of those taken by the Parkland shooting have already been recognized as heros. The U.S. Army for example, has posthumously awarded the Medal of Heroism to three students who were also Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps cadets.

Fortunately, Mr. Borges didn't die, but he should still be applauded for his bravery.

Please sign if you agree and tell Gov. Rick Scott to recognize Mr. Borges for what he is; a true hero.
