Shame on the European Games: Save the Dogs

  • by: Laura Simpson

There is a long history of rounding up and killing dogs in advance of Olympic events. The poisoning, shooting and burning of homeless dogs is strategically rolled out in an effort to "cleanse" cities before these events.

After video evidence that Azerbaijan is burning street dogs in furnaces in advance of the European Games 2015 regional Olympics competition, we stand united in the following demands:

1. CEASE THE BURNING & BEATING OF DOGS IN AZERBAIJAN:
The inhumane round up and killing of dogs in Azerbaijan must be halted. The European Games must be held fully accountable for all illegal and inhumane campaigns to harm dogs.

2. HUMANE DOG MANAGEMENT MUST BE PART OF THE PLANNING:
Future host cities should present a detailed plan about their stray dog management policies and measures they are taking to ensure that Olympic events are not creating mass killing campaigns. Event organizers, sponsors and host countries bear EQUAL responsibility in carrying out events that do no harm to animals.
