We the undersigned want a better quality of life for all people with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), their families and carers.
We thank you for the autism state plan (ASP http://autismstateplan.dhs.vic.gov.au/ ) and the $$ to kick start the priority areas of action but so much more is needed right now. Our community are being robbed of opportunities to develop to their full potential across the developmental ages and stages.
We plead with you to invest in the Autism State Plan priorities in a way which will provide quality, best practices with no waiting to access all areas of supports and services across the lifespan.
With every passing day more and more people with an ASD and their families are being disadvantaged. The outcomes of families and people with an ASD are not what they should be. Please give every child and adult with an ASD opportunities equivalent to those of their neurotypical peers.
Bring individuals and carers back from the brink of their breaking point. Remove the waiting lists for services such as diagnosis; intervention, education support, transition support, tertiary, education or employment support, housing and so on.
A generation of students are being condemned to poor outcomes such as severe secondary mental health issues, unemployment, homelessness, drug and alcohol dependence and suicide, because they are denied access to appropriate educational services or supports.
Support families and carers so that they are not forced to relinquish or abandon their loved ones to the care of the DHS simply because they can no longer wait for the service they desperately need.
Whilst there is no cure for autism, we value the life of each and every person with an ASD. Demonstrate that you do too, and stop the robbery with significant investment in the services and supports they need and give them a chance to be their best.
