Demand Protection for Spain's Greyhounds

In Spain Animal Welfare Laws apply only to domestic pets, not to hunting animals owned by farmers.  This petition is targeted at Spanish Minister for the Enviroment Senora Cristina Narbona, who can change animal protection laws. She is sympathetic to animals but lacks support within the Spanish government.  The original blogger firmly believes that international pressure can force the introduction of stronger animal welfare laws in Spain.  We all have a chance to do something about this horrifying situation.

Once this petition has reached its preliminary target, I will forward all signatories to the Spanish Ministers for the Environment (email: ministra@mma.es) , Agriculture (e-mail: infopsoe@psoe.es) and the Spanish Ambassador to the USA (e-mail: juarez@mapausa.org).

Thank you to everyone who signs this petition and I wish us all success in agitating for change.
Dear Minister of the Environment, Senora Cristina Narbona

I am horrified to learn that on average ten thousand greyhound dogs ('galgos') are killed each year by their owners after hunting season has ended.  Spanish animal welfare activists have documented that greyhounds are hanged from trees, thrown down wells or abandoned in the woods or streets to die. Some are burned alive.

Even before being killed these poor galgos live in miserable conditions.
Many are crammed in sheds without daylight for days- even up to a week- with very little food. Some are crudely kept in the back of vans and
have died from heat exhaustion. They get little food or water.
After an exhaustive day of hunting, dogs that hunted well might
be %u201Crewarded%u201D with stale bread and fresh water. Poor-performing
dogs are often left behind in the woods to die or are hung from a
tree by its owner.

All those that have signed this petition, urge you to do all within your authority to extend animal welfare and protection laws to dogs that are used for hunting or for sports.  We cannot allow this horrifc slaughter to continue.  You have the support of international animal welfare organisations and activists and all right-thinking people in all countries to pursue new and stronger laws.

Thank you for your consideration.
