Mayor Fenty's office is racing to solidify plans for the destruction of McMillan Park, replacing historic structures with approximately 1200 housing units and 2 MILLION square feet of commercial buildings. The Mayor's proposal will cost DC residents over $60 million in developer subsidies, cripple existing traffic, increase air pollution, endanger DC's public water supply, increase storm-water runoff, and hinder first-responder access to DC%u2019s major medical campuses. Current plans provide NO public benefits (i.e. library, recreation facility, senior center, significant publicly-accessible parkland.) In addition, demolishing this unique landmark eliminates economically viable and environmentally sustainable development alternatives.
ONLY ONE developer has been consulted for this unique 25-acre site and all deals have been done behind closed doors. This unique and irreplaceable PUBLIC ASSET must not be squandered for private developer profit. The community has chosen preservation with sustainable development; the development process must be reopened.
WE, THE UNDERSIGNED demand that the Executive Office of the Mayor and the DC Department of Planning cease current development plans and initiate an OPEN and TRANSPARENT process working with a task force of residents, to select a Design Team and Master Developer for the historic McMillan Sand Filtration Site that will preserve this unique site's historic integrity, protect the environment, and provide community amenities and benefits. We demand that the DC City Council disapprove any disposition resolutions or development incentives related to the current development proposal.
