Help Walmart Be a GREEN Leader!

Most of us shop at Wal-Mart for something, even the greenest of us. You may have  noticed some small changes in the products available, like the new ParentsChoice® Organic Baby Wipes, and White Cloud® GreenEarthTM 100% recycled  bathroom tissue. These are great, I use them personally, and I am a mom to four! However, alot more can be done to vamp up the Green Change going on. At my local Wal-mart, they carry these products, but they are not the first readily available of their kind, nor are they predominant. I had to really look for the recycled bathroom tissue, and I am still not seeing things like bio-degradable non-plastic trash bags, or cloth diaper covers, and I think the use of plastic shopping bags should be stopped entirely.

As recently as January 26th 2009, when Wal-mart had its "2009 Sustainability Milestone Meeting,"  ideas were being discussed for ways to "be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy, create zero waste and sell products that help sustain the environment." This is a direct quote from Mike Duke at the meeting, which can be seen here:

I submit that we help Mike Duke achieve his goals, in supporting him in making these changes happen. This is a simple case of supply = demand. The more people that choose earth friendly products and purchase them on a regular basis, the more readily available they will come, until, hopefully, the old outdated products will be phased out. If you would like to see more of these quality products at your local Wal-mart, support Mike Duke in signing this petition below. Let him know that he has your support in his goal to make Wal-mart a Green Leader. If we can get a giant corporation like Wal-mart on the bandwagon, we will have a stronger voice in the market, and a better bond with our supplier. Thank you for your support!

First, we the undersigned want to thank you for your obvious effort to make sustainability and ecological responsibility two of your top goals in your new found position at Wal-mart, as President and CEO. We are sure you are aware of the tremendous opportunity you have to make drastic changes in Wal-mart's operations that can have a lasting positive effect on your consumers and the world at large. We want to back you 100% in your efforts to ensure these changes happen. There are alot of expectations today for "green energy", and the small changes we are seeing in your stores are encouraging. However, we want you to know that we want more of these changes, and in a timely fashion. We'd like to see a broader range of eco-friendly products available, including but not limited to: bio-degradable non-plastic trash bags, cloth diapers and diaper covers, non-abrasive detergents for cleaning, clothing made from renewable natural resources like hemp, the inclusion of more toys made from wood instead of plastic, and how about phasing out the use of plastic bags at the check out's all together? How about carrying home-use compost containers in the Lawn and Garden center? Ultimately we would like to see the new products phase out the old. We would also be encouraged to see new Wal-mart building sites using workable forms of renewable energy, like wind and solar power. We would like to see a reduction in filler in the stores too, and by filler we mean items not really intended for anything other than to look shiny and be bought, only to get taken home and break. We know change is coming, we feel it and are seeing it every where in our society today. We feel that together we can make a lasting impact toward the greater good with a renewed dedication to our consumer-supplier relationship, and that relationships ability to change with the times. In other words, if you put the right things in your stores, we will continue to buy them from you. We hope you will continue to encourage your employees to promote the changes you have proposed on a personal basis in each and every store. We also hope you will seek out the guidance of wonderful minds that are out there to give you the instruction needed on how to bring these changes to fruition in a safe, productive, and timely fashion. Thank you for listening to us, we appreciate it, and we are looking forward to a new Wal-mart in 2009 and the years to come.
