Call of a Three to Five Year Ban on Bluefin Tuna Fishing

On Sunday, the 18th of November, 2007, the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (Iccat) voted to continue the implementaion of a "recovery plan" on Bluefin Tuna stocks which began late last year (link here).  With hard evidence of overfishing due to illegal and underreported catches, the Iccat's decision illustrates a denial in the state of the Bluefin Tuna's stock which is in serious jeopardy (link here).  Unless immediate action is demanded, the future of the Bluefin (as well as other fish species) is uncertain.

A complete ban would provide:
  1. a straightforward decree necessary for the proficient prosecution of illegal fishing practices which currently run rampant;
  2. a minimum time allowance for the Bluefin stock to reestablish itself;
  3. the ability for further research to be conducted pro-actively before stock collapse;
  4. awareness of the causes and effects of overfishing around the world;
  5. a possible market adjustment to correctly establish a proper price structure in relation to current supply.
Support the US sponsored and WWF supported ban on Atlantic Bluefin Tuna by signing this petition, cutting Bluefin Tuna from your diet and raising awareness of the global issue of overfishing.

We the undersigned support a proposal for a three-to-five year moratorium on Bluefin Tuna.  As concerned global-citizens responsible for the maintenance and conservation of our international environment, we feel this ban on the fishing of Bluefin Tuna will provide the groundwork necessary to reduce the possibility of a stock collapse due to overfishing, illegal fishing and the practice of underreporting fish caught.
