We the undersigned believe that Australians should have the ability to make an informed decision when purchasing sunscreen.

Nanoparticles, tiny particles of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, are added to many sunscreens to assist in absorption. While the harm of these particles has not been conclusively proven, their safety is in equal doubt. The obvious choice is to let Australians choose for themselves whether they want to use sunscreens which include nanoparticles.

However, scientists from the National Measurement Institute say that nanoparticles have been found to be present in sunscreens which claim to be nano-free. In the absence of laws requiring clear labelling, Australians cannot be sure whether sunscreens contain nanoparticles.

Please require sunscreen labels to clearly state whether the product includes nanoparticles.
