Dog Friendly Nanaimo includes all dogs. Change BSL to DDL

We are a group of dog owners in Nanaimo looking for change to our current animal control bylaws. We would like to see our restricted breed bylaw replaced with a dangerous dog bylaw that is proven and effective. There is overwhelming evidence that the Ontario ban is simply not working and there has been no significant decrease in the number of dog bites since it was implemented in 2005. Sadly 1000% of family pets have died because of this ban.

 

Bill Bruce program in Calgary Alberta is world renowned for being extremely effective and self-sufficient. Calgary has an amazing 90% compliance rate for dog licenses and 60% with cats. Their entire program is run on license fees and no taxpayer dollars.

 

Calgary dog attacks are at the lowest levels in 25 years despite a steady growth in population, and they have no breed specific laws. Calgary is a leader is reducing dog attacks in Canada.  We want our community to be able to say the same.
