Examine the tax-exempt status of religious institutions

"If a tax-exempt group %u2014 religious or secular %u2014 promotes ideas which contradict important public policies (like desegregation), then the group%u2019s tax-exempt status may not be granted or extended. Tax exemptions are provided in exchange for groups%u2019 providing services to the community; when the groups undermine important goals of the community, then the tax exemptions are no longer justified."

The active involvement of UTAH's Mormon Church (among others) in California's Proposition 8 (seeking to amend the State Constitution to make gay marriage illegal) has -- in my opinion -- gone too far.

Organized religion RECEIVES special tax status "in exchange for groups' providing services to the community," but it's a balance and it must all be viewed in context.  In my opinion, any religious institution that actively or passively supported this measure has crossed over the line, and should have its preferential tax status revoked, or not extended, upon its expiration.
