Integrity Commissioner at Kitchener City Hall

An Integrity Commissioner can go a long way in maintaining the public's confidence in City Hall.  Currently, the public has little recourse in the way of a) discovering the breaches in ethics that might have occurred at City Hall and b) doing something about that breach in behaviour.  Should the City adopt an Integrity Commissioner, the person who occupies the position would have independence.  The Accountability and Transparency Committee envisioned independence as follows: a) that the Integrity Commissioner not be hired as a salaried staff member, b) be appointed for a set term, and c) applying stringent rules on the removal of the Integrity Commissioner.  The Accountability and Transparency Committee narrowly passed (by one vote) that the committee recommend to Council the appointment of an Integrity Commissioner.  However, that vote is now in jeopardy, as the committee has decided to vote once again on whether to recommend an Integrity Commissioner to Council.  The majority of citizen representatives on the committee support the appointment of an Integrity Commissioner.  It's the goal of this petition to see that the Acountability and Transparency Committee recommends and that Kitchener City Council appoints an Integrity Commissioner.
