Let's Make Flavour ... GONE!
For years the Tobacco Industry has marketed their deadly products to youth. They have come up with creative ways to sneak their products under their noses and nothing smells better to a young person than the smell of candy. "Cherry Skoal is for someone who likes the taste of candy, if you know what I'm saying..." says a US Smokeless Tobacco Executive.
Clearly flavoured tobacco products like spit and cigarillos are meant to target youth. The packaging which can resemble lip gloss, gum and markers, is bright and colourful a marketing technique also known as "youth-friendly".
We want these flavoured tobacco products gone, we don't ask that all tobacco products be banned, just the flavours. The people that can make that happen is our federal government by changing the Tobacco Act or the regulations for tobacco industry operating in Canada. Currently there is a Private Member's Bill C-566 on the books in Ottawa that will amend the Tobacco Act to ban flavours in tobacco products. If passed, it means that Tobacco Industries have one less way to target youth - Us!
Or the government could also just change the rules for the industry, either way please join us in asking the federal government to deal with this issue and protect the youth of Canada from the marketing tactics of the tobacco industry.
