Oppose the synthetic grass field at BICS

Please sign this petition to ensure that Council takes into consideration your objections to the synthetic grass field project at the Bowen Island Community School. Your additional comments will help inform Council about your views.

A survey was presented to council's Meeting of the Whole on Monday July 21, 2008 with approximately 50 yea and 350 nay responses, but the views expressed did not stop the project.

This petition will be presented Mayor & Council prior to their final decision on January 26th, 2009.

Also, please attend the Synthetic Grass Field Project Public Information Meeting: Saturday, January, 17th, 2009 (1:30 to 4:00 pm at the Bowen Island Community School Gymnasium).

Petition cover letter to Council:

We, the undersigned, stand opposed to the installation of a synthetic grass playing field at the Bowen Island Community School.

The proposed 500,000 dollar budget (including 375,000 dollars from Bowen Island community reserves) is asking too much from Bowen Island tax payers. Further undisclosed costs such as lighting, maintenance, field surface replacement and disposal will continue to drain future budgets and limit spending on other recreational options.

We believe that the installation of a synthetic grass field is the wrong choice for Bowen at this time. We request that Council and the Parks and Recreation Commission to seek more sustainable means of developing facilities which are of interest to a greater portion of the population, and at less cost to our community.

We appreciate your consideration of our concerns.
