Help rescue stray dogs of the Pylaia-Panorama-Hortiatis Municipality

Care for stray animals in Greece has been problematic for years. Unfortunately, a lot of people have "solved" this problem by poisoning the animals. Until 2010, the Pylaia-Panorama-Hortiatis Municipality had an ongoing program for spaying stray female dogs and for providing shelter to handicapped and old dogs that were not fit enough to survive on their own out in the streets. Healthy spayed dogs were let loose in the community. Since 2011, the municipality has stopped paying for shelter and a lot of animals that had been kept in captivity for years have been let loose in the streets. Furthermore, because of the economic crisis, the number of stray dogs in the community has exploded, straining the resources of volunteers. It is important that the local government assumes its responsibility for the stray animals.
We the undersigned ask that the Municipality provides shelter to animals that are unfit to survive out in the streets, like three-legged dogs, older dogs, and dogs that have been kept in captivity for long periods of time. Also, we ask that the municipality helps local volunteer organizations feed the stray animals by sharing the cost for their food. Thank you for taking the time to read our letter and for taking this matter under consideration.
