DANIEL ORTEGA
Daniel Ortega has been one Nicaragua's most internationally-famous and infamous political figure since the 1980s.

He has twice been elected the country's president: in 1984 and again in 2006. From an early age Ortega was a political aspirant with revolutionary leanings, ditching college in 1963 to work with the underground political group called Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional known world wide as the Sandinistas.

The Sandinistas came to power in 1979 by overthrowing Anastasio Somoza Debayle, the last member of the gory US backed Somoza dynasty.

Ortega, or Danny boy, was elected president in 1984 but his years in office were dominated by the civil war and factional turmoil and along the way DANNY BOY ORTEGA drifted from Sandino´s nationalist ideals and turned into a raving Marxist with a penchant for rhetoric %u201Csampled%u201D from Fidel Castro.

His ferocious verbal attacks against the US became the broken record stuck in US president Ronald Reagan%u2019s hearing aid. Ronald Reagan issued an economic embargo against Nicaragua and financed a group of counter-revolutionaries, named la Contra.

Ortega is a champion at burning bridges and begins to loose his popularity even among his fellow Sandinista comrades. With the fall of the Berlin wall and the crumbling of the Soviets Danny boy found himself with no friends and no foreign aid.

He lost his bid for re-election in 1990 to a coalition Nicaraguans parties called la UNO and VIOLETA CHAMORRO became the first woman president in the history of Nicaragua, Central and South América.

In 1997, ARNOLDO ALEMÁN became president of Nicaragua. This union, known as the %u201CPACT%u201D provides them both with constitutional immunity and allows Alemán to continue ransacking the national treasure. THE PACT also leads to change the constitution so that a presidential candidate could win with only 35 % of the vote.
