When I worked at The Body Shop, I discovered something quite disturbing. Upon reading the introductory manual for the new employee, The Body Shop claimed to have discovered a humane method of extracting musk from the musk deer. Following this find, I began researching. Below, are my, incredibly disturbing findings.
%u201CThe musk pod of the musk deer is situated between the stomach and genitals, and the animal must be killed in order to retrieve it; and that obtaining even one kg of musk grain requires between thirty and fifty deer. If you in fact do not use musk from the musk deer, as I have read that you do, you must use synthetic musk then. If this is the case, do you use aromatic nitro musks, polycyclic musk compounds, or macrocyclic musk compounds?%u201D
(My initial email to them - it took three emails for them to reply).
Not only is there no humane way to extract the musk, but they must in fact kill the animal to extract it. On top of that the alternatives are mostly carcinogenic.
Below is their reply:
%u201CThe Body Shop White Musk range was the first fragrance anywhere to avoid the traditional cruel methods of gathering real musk from
deer or civets by using synthetic musk in replacement to real musk. We have never harmed any animals to produce products for our customers as one of our core values states that we are Against Animal Testing.
Unfortunately, we are unable to disclose our methods for our White Musk line production as that is considered proprietary information.%u201D
My reply:
%u201CIf that is true, that you do use synthetic, than I would suggest revising your employee manuals, which state that you use humane methods of extracting the musk from the animal. May I ask why, in the employee manual, you state that you obtain it from the animal, if you in fact do use synthetic? Also, the reason I ask what type of synthetic is used, is because the first two I mentioned are much more frequently used in the production of synthetic musk, and are, in fact, carcinogenic, which, as a consumer, concerns me. Thank you.%u201D
Upon emailing them back, divulging my research, as seen above, they immediately claimed the component they used was the non-carcinogenic one.
%u201CWe are unsure of what "employee manual" you are referring to; however, the information that we are providing is current and accurate. Again, none of our fragrances, including White Musk, contain natural musks. They are made using synthetic musks. Please note that synthetic Musks can be divided into 3 main types: Nitro Musks, Polycyclic Musks & Macrocyclic Musks. The only synthetic musks now allowed for use in The Body Shop products are Macrocyclic Musks. The Macrocyclic Musks in our products are purchased as part of fully formulated fragrances or fragranced products. We do not source these particular materials directly.%u201D
When I told them that I had worked for The Body Shop and read it in their employee manual, they never responded.
So which is it?
And if they do not extract the musk from animals, why would they claim such to their employees? And then, refuse to divulge how and where they in fact obtain the musk, until confronted with research and facts?
It is my hope that this petition creates awareness of this issue, and perhaps finally reveals the truth, whatever it may be.
We as consumers have a right to know the truth, and a responsibility to take action - for the well-being of all involved. In this day and age, there are no more excuses and little time.
The Body Shop says that "businesses have the power to do good" - so do we.
