Tunisia, Stop Sending Asylum Seekers Back to Libya

Libyans have been fleeing the political and social turmoil of their home country since the Arab Spring began. However, according to Amnesty International, Tunisian authorities are turning away those fleeing into the country trying to reach refugee camps.

The Tunisian security forces claim that these Libyans do not have the proper entry documents. However once the refugees inform them that they are seeking asylum, Tunisia must allow them to enter and have their situation assessed by the proper authorities.

It is against international law to turn away refugees that seek asylum as they have the right to international protection if they might be persecuted and abused in their home country.

As Libya does not have refugee camps, Tunisia is the only option for some of these refugees and they deserve to have their case heard in front of the proper authorities.

Tell Tunisia that returning Libyan refugees is unacceptable and must stop.

We the undersigned, demand that Tunisia security forces stop returning Libyan refugees who claim asylum back home. The situation in Libya is dangerous and many refugees face persecution if they return. According to international law, it is their right to have their situation assessed by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees if they seek asylum. In a time of political and social turmoil, the international community must help and support displaced people who are in need of protection and the Libyan refugees are no exception.

It is their right to plead their case in front of the UNHCR and Tunisia must not prevent this from happening. Please show the world that Tunisia is a fair and just country that is willing to help people in need by allowing Libyan refugees access to the UNHCR.

Thank you.
