Update: After weeks of protest, Hosni Mubarak has stepped down as president of Egypt! We are inspired by the people of Egypt, and we join them in their celebrations. There is still a long way to go on the road to democracy however. Please continue to sign, so that those in power know that we continue to support the Egyptian people.

As Egyptians have taken to the streets to protest the 30-year rule of President Hosni Mubarak, the government has displayed its authoritarian bona fides by cracking down on the media and the people's right to free speech.

Egyptian authorities have detained and beaten journalists and photographers, shut down the websites of two independent Egyptian newspapers and blocked access to social media sites, including Facebook and Twitter.

Egypt must stop this violence against the media and end its censorship of the people. Tell President Mubarak to stop the violence and allow the Egyptian people to exercise their right to free speech.
Dear President Mubarak,

The violence against the media and censorship of dissenting voices in your country is a gross violation of every human's right to free speech and expression.

[Your comments will be added here]

I urge you to end the attack on journalists, re-open closed media outlets, unblock access to social media (like Facebook and Twitter) and allow the people of Egypt to speak their minds -- even if they don't agree with you.
