Venus Cuff

Venus Rose Stewart did everything a mother could do to protect her children. Venus had a police escort from Virginia to the airport to return herself, with her children, to family in Michigan. Venus obtained a protective order from the court in Michigan to keep her estranged husband, Douglas Harrie Stewart, away from them. Venus went to court in Michigan and obtained custody of her children. Venus died a week later. Venus' estranged husband kidnapped and killed her. Her family is still searching for her body. Everyday in the US, more than three women and one man are murdered by thier intimate partners. Intimate partner homicides accounted for 30% of women and 5% of the murders of men.
While nothing can protect a person from being stalked and killed. (certainly not a piece of paper), if there were a device on the person the protective order was against, Venus could have been warned, or we would know where Venus' remains were today. The law enforcement could have tracked his whereabouts. If a judge agrees there may be a threat against your life and signs a protective order, then that should be enough to track someone that could be a danger to you. A GPS device, (anklet), placed on the offender, should have to be paid for by the offender. This could save taxpayers the costs of intmate partner violence in the US $5.8 billion dollars per year.
To quote President Obama,"To reinforce these efforts, advocates, law enforcement officials, and others who work with victims must continue to improve their capacity to respond with swift and comprehensive action. From raising awareness to pursuing criminal justice, all of us have a role to play in stopping this senseless and harmful behavior."
The citizens named on this petition would like to honor Venus Rose Stewart for her efforts, along with all other women and men that have been abused and/or murdered by a domestic partners, by naming this GPS device, "The Venus Cuff".
