The majority of Americans support the regulation and taxation of marijuana. Likewise, most Americans consider the War On Drugs a costly failure that needs to be replaced by a more sensible approach. Nonetheless, the prohibition against marijuana and the arrest of marijuana consumers continues.

Marc Emery, a Canadian businessman, was arrested in Vancouver, BC and extradited to the US where he now sits in prison with over 400 days left on his sentence. He was not selling marijuana or smuggling marijuana within Canada or the US. He had a legitimate business selling marijuana seeds: this is not considered a crime in Canada. It must be noted that, as a law-biding Canadian, Mr. Emery paid taxes on the income made from his marijuana seed business. Nonetheless, he was arrested on behalf of the DEA which clearly wanted to make an example of him. Quite simply, his arrest was essentially political.
