DEMAND That Pets Be Covered by the Fair Housing Act

According to the HUD website, the Fair Housing Act prevents people from being discriminated against based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability and the presence of children. However, a land lord is free to refuse a rental to someone with pets. Although this egregious practice has been acceptable for many decades now, it is time to end this unfair bias toward animals and their owners.

For many of us pet owners, our pets are like family to us. For me, personally, having my two dogs has been extremely therapeutic and has helped me combat my daily struggles with depression and anxiety. This is also the case for millions of other Americans.

I am so sick and tired of seeing landlords refusing to rent to families with pets. My two dogs are house-broken and have never torn anything up, but many landlords in my area have a "no pet" policy that prevents me from finding suitable housing for me, my husband, and our three children.

This is simply unfair and inexcusable.

As long as your pet is housebroken and neutered/spayed and you are a responsible owner, there should be no discrimination against you in your search for a place to rent!

You shouldn't be made to choose between keeping a family member and being homeless!

PETS ARE FAMILY, TOO, and should be covered by the Fair Housing Act. At the very least, the term "children" as stated in the Fair Housing Act should be made to apply to pets if an outright amendment to the Act won't be considered.
