For months, Pete Hegseth's Department of Defense has fudged its own casualty count to deliberately obscure the true human cost of Donald Trump's disastrous war with Iran, quietly scrubbing killed and wounded service members from the official count. Only after reporters, watchdogs, and members of Congress raised a big stink did the Pentagon finally admit to hundreds more casualties than previously known. But even then, chicanery and deception ensued.

Pete Hegseth's Defense Department invented a new, intentionally vague "Overseas Operations" category to separate recent casualties from the "main" tally, rather than owning up to what GOP Rep. Thomas Massie accurately called "an absurd ruse." According to the new policy, US service members killed or injured after the April 7 ceasefire (which ultimately collapsed) do not belong in the official "Operation Epic Fury" count, because apparently we are no longer at war and are simply engaged in overseas operations now. Got it.
Congress must immediately investigate the Pentagon's deceptive casualty reporting practices, including who specifically ordered the unconscionable reclassification of dead and wounded US troops and why the American public was intentionally misled.
When it comes to military casualties, transparency isn't partisan or optional. We owe it to the troops who serve our country and the taxpayers who fund their missions to be forthright, open, and honest.
We need answers. Now.
