Abolish Capital Punishment

The United States is one of the only modern nations to execute its citizens. This must come to an end. Here are several of the many compelling reasons why execution is not the answer:

+It hasn't been proven to deter crime.
+It's racially biased. 75% of executed prisoners are black or Latino.
+It's significantly more expensive than a life sentence. According to the Dallas Morning News, "it is three times more costly to execute a prisoner than it is to keep them in a single cell at the highest security level for 40 years."
+There's a lot of room for human error and false witness testimony.

In the wake of Troy Davis's unjust death, this petition urges our current Congress to end capital punishment. It's expensive, useless, and ultimately unethical. Our legal system should not have the responsibility of taking lives.
