Commute the Death Sentence of Romell Broom

Petition To Commute the Death Sentence of Romell Broom

We, the undersigned, together with the family and friends of Romell Broom, urge Governor Strickland to commute Broom's death sentence. Broom was sentenced to death in 1985 for aggravated murder. His trial was constitutionally ineffective since it failed to conduct a thorough investigation into his dysfunctional and traumatic childhood, which included parental drug and alcohol abuse, exposure to physical violence, inconsistent forms of discipline, his forced dropping out of school in 10th Grade to care for his younger siblings, as well as his reaction to the shooting death of one of his childhood friends. His counsel could not advocate effectively for him since the state trial judge unreasonably denied Broom continuance until these mitigating factors could be documented and presented to the jury.

Romell Broom's sentence should be commuted.

Action petitioned for: We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urge Governor Strickland to commute the sentence of Romell Broom to life without parole.
