Only three countries in the world still allow companies to hunt and kill whales for profit. In fact, most countries agreed to ban commercial whaling back in 1986 - 40 years ago! Yet Iceland, Norway, and Japan have stubbornly refused to properly prioritize the lives and well-being of these majestic animals.
Until now. Iceland's government is now officially considering a permanent ban on whaling. We must show our support so the government follows through on this proposal! critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable, or at-risk. That list includes fin whales, the second-largest animals on the planet, which are frequently hunted in the waters around Iceland. Right now, Iceland officially allows the killing of up to 150 fin whales.In the first eight months of 2026, people have already caught and killed around 80 fin whales. That included multiple
pregnant whales who were collectively carrying seven unborn calves. When these animals perish, it is not a quick, peaceful, or painless death. In fact, Iceland's own government published a report in 2023 in which it acknowledged that,
after being harpooned, whales often slowly suffered for around 2 hours before dying. Sometimes, people resorted to shooting the whales with explosive harpoons more than once, because the animals were taking so long to die.
Polls suggest that less than 2% of the Icelandic population even eats whale meat. So why are so many animals being forced to suffer horrific prolonged deaths? For what?
Whales deserve to live freely in their home - the open ocean. That is their territory, and we have no right to terrorize and slaughter them. Thankfully, the Icelandic government seems to be recognizing the importance of ending such cruel mistreatment.
