OpenAI Knew a School Shooter Was Planning an Attack. It Said Nothing.

A young person's disturbing conversations with ChatGPT were flagged by OpenAI's own safety team months before she carried out a mass shooting at a school in British Columbia. Her account was deactivated, but she simply created a new one and kept using the platform to plan her attack. Nine people were killed, most of them children. OpenAI's safety team had recommended contacting law enforcement. Company leadership overruled them.

Sign the petition urging OpenAI to implement mandatory law enforcement notification whenever its safety systems flag a credible, imminent risk of violence, and to permanently close the loophole that lets a deactivated account simply be recreated.

After the shooting, OpenAI's CEO publicly apologized and promised reforms. Those reforms never came. British Columbia's government has said the company has still not taken meaningful action, even after repeated attempts to engage.

Meanwhile, families continue to live with what happened. One survivor was shot three times, including in the skull, and now lives with permanent brain injuries. The school where the attack happened is being torn down, and the province is left absorbing the cost of rebuilding it and caring for the community left behind.

This is not the first time OpenAI's systems have flagged warning signs without meaningful follow-through. A company building tools used by hundreds of millions of people has a responsibility to act when its own safety systems identify a credible threat, not simply log it and move on. Real accountability means closing the loopholes that let a flagged, dangerous user simply come back under a new name.

Sign the petition and demand OpenAI finally implement the safeguards it promised before more lives are lost.
