Winter Is Coming. It's Time to Look Out for Our Cats!

Many people believe that because cats were outdoor animals before they were domestic ones, they are equipped to handle all of the seasons. Unfortunately, even though cats have warm furry coats that offer protection from the elements, they are still susceptible to suffering and death in the winter months. This is why humans must be aware of the risks posed to our furry neighbors and take steps to protect them!

Each winter, an untold number of stray or feral cats die in the bitter cold and harsh weather conditions. Once temperatures get below freezing, a cat's chances of death goes way up. But kittens and elderly cats are at risk even at temperatures as high as 45 degrees Fahrenheit.

There are many ways humans can help protect their furry neighbors. One of the best options is to build a small shelter where cats can seek warmth and refuge. Ideal shelters are level and elevated with a sufficient doorway for cats to fit in.

Avoid salt, antifreeze, and harsh chemicals in areas where you have seen cats around.

Be sure to always check your car before driving, too, as many cats seek shelter in the warmth of the engine or underneath cars.

Finally, providing food for cats is especially important in winter months when they need extra energy. Dry food is a great option since it doesn't freeze like wet food does, but heating up wet food and providing it in a plastic container works well, too.
