Ban the sale and use of Synthetic Bath Salts

A harmful new designer drug known as bath salts which has become increasingly popular and increasingly scary. Poison control and 911 centers across the U.S. have reported growing numbers of calls about the synthetic stimulant, Police in the Tri- Cities area alone are reporting that these types of calls have quadrupled in just the last few weeks and that number is increasing daily.
Make no mistake though; these are not bath salts like those you would use in your bath. The $20 packets are available in convenient stores, tobacco stores, head shops, truck stops and on the Internet, and marketed as bath salts or sometimes plant food and come with the (often-ignored) disclaimer, not for human consumption. They're not subject to regulation even though they contain various potent chemicals, including Mephedrone and MDPV, which is a stimulant. This drug is a derivative that's very similar to amphetamines, and its side effects are largely the same side effects one would expect with amphetamines in large doses. If you take the very worst of some of the other drugs -- LSD and Ecstasy with their hallucinogenic-delusional type properties, PCP with extreme agitation, superhuman strength and combativeness, as well as the stimulant properties of cocaine and meth if you take all the worst of those and put them all together this is what you get. It's ugly!!!!
Bath salt abuse has become a national epidemic within a very short period of time sending thousands of teenagers and adults to the ER and killing others, the nasty side effects are lasting weeks and sometimes months after use. The chemicals are highly addictive so in turn cause intense cravings which could increase crime rates because these users like most drug addicts will do what they have to do to buy it. There has been no Clinical studies on this drug to actually know truely what the long term effects are. Another scary concern is that synthetic drugs do not show up in routine drug screens.
We need legislation NOW to ban the drug not only here in Tennessee, but across the United States because people can get around state bans by just ordering the products off the Internet and having them shipped to neighboring states which has not yet outlawed them. Lawmakers need to make it a felony to distribute or manufacture bath salts and make stiff civil penalties for those convicted of breaking the law. We need legislation to stop companies from manufacturing this product; actually any drug of it's kind because we all know that drug chemists can change the compound to get around a law.
By signing this petition you are showing your support to put an end to this deadly drug that just within 15 minutes after use can forever change a life.
