Secret Service: Find An Alternative to Closing the South White House Sidewalk!

In response to concerns about intruders, the Secret Service has opted to close the sidewalk along the South Fence of the White House complex, arguing that it will increase security. While the North Fence area has long been closed to the public, the south sidewalk is a popular gathering and protest spot.

Rather than blocking public access, the Secret Service may wish to reconsider other security options that could balance the desire to protect the safety of the White House and its occupants against the public's interest. While the agency says that members of the public will be welcome along the northern edge of the Ellipse Park for the purpose of taking photos and, presumably, protesting, this will distance visitors from the White House itself.

The public understands that a temporary closure may be necessary for the purposes of conducting a security audit and implementing any recommended changes, but a permanent closure seems extreme, and unwarranted.
