Trump Wants to Let LGTBQ Folks Die in the Middle of a Pandemic

*UPDATE* Good news! A federal judge blocked Trump's new rule, citing that it did not align with a Supreme Court ruling in an earlier case which includes discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity as sex discrimination. This block is vital to the health and wellbeing of the LGBTQ community, but it is only temporary. Keep signing and sharing the petition until the final decision is made to keep protections in place!

In the middle of a pandemic, Trump is trying to strip away safeguards that protect LGBTQ people from health care discrimination. Under Obama, it was illegal for hospitals, doctors, nurses, or other medical workers to discriminate against or deny care for trans or queer folks (and people perceived as being trans or queer). But those days are about to be over.

The Trump administration has spent the past year trying to reverse this rule, and now they've finalized their plan. Under his reign, doctors will once again have complete freedom to turn LGBTQ folks away and refuse to offer services or care. Not just gender-affirming care. Any care.

Sign the petition to tell the Trump administration to back off this deadly plan!

This is the most dangerous possible time to unleash such a policy. Again, to reiterate: we are in the midst of a pandemic. Right now, in COVID-19 hotspots, hospitals are running out of ventilators. They are running out of beds. Medical staff are being forced to actively choose between patients when deciding where to direct resources — in other words, deciding who lives and who dies.

And if those staff members don't like or "don't approve of" you because of your actual or perceived gender or sexual orientation, that could be all it takes for that lifesaving ventilator to go to someone else.

This is not an exaggeration or hysterically overblowing the situation. In fact, trans and queer folks experience discrimination in medical settings all the time. Approximately one out of every five LGBTQ individuals say they've personally experienced a medical provider refusing them care; more than one in four experienced medical-related harassment. That's already horrific at any time. But in this day and age, the stakes are even higher and scarier.

Discrimination, harassment, and denial of care can have no place in the medical field. There is no way to excuse this inhumanity. Don't let Trump and his cronies turn back the clock and push LGBTQ Americans to the medical sidelines. Sign the petition now!
