Demand Property Rights for Wives in Ghana

The Property Rights of Spouses Bill which was approved by the Ghana cabinet in 2013 has still not passed the male dominated parliament in that country. Meanwhile, it appears that Ghana's current property laws encourage violence against women. When a woman does not have even joint ownership of the house she lives in, she is far too dependent on her husband. If he becomes abusive, she may feel she has nowhere to go and no options but to stay and put up with an abusive marriage. Please join me in asking the Parliament of Ghana to immediately pass the "Property Rights of Spouses" bill.

Dear Members of Ghana Parliament:

I am appalled that you have dragged your feet when it comes to ensuring property rights for spouses. This means, quite often, that a woman lives in her husband's house and is entirely dependent on him. This is not a good situation. If he turns abusive, she feels she has no option but to stay in a dangerous environment. Please pass the "Property Rights of Spouses" bill  immediately.
