End Coyote-Killing Contests in Alberta!

Paul, the organizer of a recent coyote-killing contest in Alberta, Canada, plans to continue hosting the contests no matter what. "Coyotes are pests," he said. "They're legal to hunt any time of the year, with permission on farmers' land."

Though Alberta doesn't plan to ban coyote hunting, the province has the authority to restrict killing contests. In addition to these contests being cruel and promoting violence against animals, they are ineffective in curbing coyote populations or undesirable behavior.

Michael Howie of the Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals says, "The science is clear. When coyotes are persecuted, their populations increase; when their social units or families are disrupted, conflict and depredation on livestock increases; and there is no argument — even if there is a healthy population size — to glorify the mass killing of sentient, ecologically significant animals."

Coyote killing contests hurt and terrify animals and do nothing to help Alberta's ecosystem or livestock. Please sign the petition to urge Alberta's authorities to ban these contests!

We, the undersigned, are concerned about coyote-killing contests in Alberta.

Though we understand that you don't plan to ban coyote hunting, we believe you should consider a ban on coyote-killing contests. In addition to these contests being cruel and promoting violence against animals, they are ineffective in curbing coyote populations or undesirable behavior.
