Save Our Water, Save Our Land

Texas has now entered the drought of record, while our policy makers have failed to address how to manage our groundwater (aquifers) to protect the resource now and for future generations. The connection between aquifers and surface water (lakes, streams, creeks and rivers) is not fully recognized in Texas law. There needs to be a fundamental shift in policy, but to what is a very big and complex question. Texans are going to need to be more educated and we need to seek local control solutions as most Texans will likely not support the state controlling their water anymore than it does now.

The Texas Legislature is in session through the end of May. Citziens need to be on alert for changes in water policy that will allow the two main lobbies who seek unlimited water supplies without any real regulation of how much and even their ability to contaminate our most precious resource. Those two lobbies are real estate developers and related firms and the oil and gas lobby.
