Abolish NC Puppy Mills

North Carolina has had the most puppy mill busts than any other state and we need to put an end to this cruel business.

Dear Legislator:
We the undersigned request that all puppy mills be abolished in favor of licensed breeders who can meet minimum standards and regulations to be verified by state inspection. As they collect taxes from their sales, they should be required to pay taxes collected to the State. This function should be relegated to the Department of Agriculture.
Commercial Dog Breeding (Puppy Mills) exist only for profit. The business model is designed to maximize puppy production at minimum cost. These dogs live in cramped and unhealthy conditions that frequently produce animals that will suffer later from health issues. They inbreed to reduce costs which often lead to behavioral and housebreaking issues as the puppies mature.
The state must pass and enforce tougher protections for animals and stronger prosecutions and penalties for those abusing animals.
North Carolina has had 11 puppy mill raids in less than two year, more than any other state in the country. Close to 1,000 dogs and puppies were rescued. Close to $300,000 were spent for feeding and providing medical care for the animals. This evidence clearly indicates the need for a bill regulating commercial breeders. Almost every product has some form of regulation and yet the citizens have no protection against sick pets. The cruelty of puppy mills extends to both animal and potential owner. It represents an emotional and financial burden to potential owners, as well as issues which creates potential long term suffering for the animal sold by these puppy mills.
Dogs are not objects. They depend on us to take care of them and treat them humanely; we have a responsibility to protect them.
