End Homelessness in the United States of America
No one should be homeless. A large percentage of the homeless population are former foster-care alumni. In such a developed nation we should, at minimum be able to provide long-term sustainable dormitory-style housing for those in need, without having to turn anyone away.
No one should have to sleep in the snow, under a bridge, in the middle of winter. No one should be raped, beaten, or murdered because they had no place to go, especially not in the U.S. No runaway should ever have to turn to a pimp as a means of finding basic shelter.
By getting homeless individuals off the street, everyone benefits.
When homeless individuals no longer have to worry about assault, rape, and murder ( tragic consequences of living on the street) these individuals can focus on their mental health, finding jobs, and ending substance abuse. People would no longer have to turn to prostitution or drug dealing as an immediate means of getting off the street.
People become homeless for a variety of reasons. The US Spends billions of dollars per year aiding individuals over-seas, so lets not forget our own. Lets require every company who hires over 100 overseas employees for the next five years, to pay a subsidy to the U.S. government in order to combat the epidemic of homelessness. We're not asking for a lot of money- we're asking for an income-based percentage, which would also be tax deductible. These dorms would create thousands of jobs across the U.S. in security and domestic services. After five years, the dorms will be able to run themselves- financially and otherwise.
In our program, all homeless individuals will participate in farming activities and will be required to participate in the community. This system has worked in Israel and other countries, so lets put this proven system to work here in the US.
Lets end homelessness now. Please sign below.
We the undersigned would like you to address the problem of homelessness in the United States of America. There is no reason for people to be homeless here. Attached you will find our proposal for eventual self-sustaining communities, which provide dormitory housing as well as jobs and medical care on-location. By moving mental health services, housing, and jobs to a single location you maximize the chance of success. There is no reason that the US can't follow suit with Israel's Kibbutz system, and build successful communities for those in need.
