Racist Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio Has No Place in the Senate

Disgraced former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio is one of the worst human rights abusers in recent American history. Now "Sheriff Joe" wants to be a US senator, and we need your help to stop him.

During his time as Maricopa County sheriff, Arpaio sparked national controversy with his bigoted and cruel policies. He forced pregnant inmates to give birth in shackles, operated an open-air "tent-city" jail in the cruel Arizona heat, ignored allegations of sexual assault and other crimes in favor of harassing Latinos.

The Justice Department found that Arpaio's department had stopped Latinos at four to nine times the rate they stopped Whites. In fact, Arpaio was so committed to his policy of racial profiling that he was convicted of criminal contempt of court for continuing the practice despite a court order to stop. Perhaps unsurprisingly, President Trump pardoned Arpaio this past fall on the very eve that Hurricane Harvey made landfall.

Joe Arpaio should never be elected hall monitor, let alone US senator. We can not — we must not — allow his bigoted, authoritarianism to shape the laws of our nation. That's why I'm calling on Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee Chair Cory Gardner to publicly condemn Arpaio's bigotry and withhold any campaign contributions from the GOP or aligned political action committees.

Let's make sure the let the GOP knows that we're watching — and that we'll reject racists and their enablers at every step of the way. Please add your name now and help stop human rights-abusing "Sheriff Joe" from becoming human rights-abusing "US senator Joe."
