Hold Trump accountable for planning a disgraceful, secret Camp David summit with the Taliban on 9/11 anniversary

As the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks approached, President Trump was finalizing secret plans to host the Taliban for peace talks at Camp David. Despite concerted pushback from numerous high-level figures in his administration, Trump stubbornly forged ahead with plans to meet with the infamous terrorist organization at the revered presidential retreat to supposedly negotiate an end to the war in Afghanistan.

Only after an 11th-hour Taliban suicide bombing in Kabul took the life of yet another American soldier were the talks abruptly called off. President Trump, previously consumed by the optics of striking a landmark peace deal at Camp David, tweeted shortly thereafter, "I immediately cancelled the meeting and called off peace negotiations. What kind of people would kill so many in order to seemingly strengthen their bargaining position?"

Uh, the Taliban, Mr. President.

Trump owes a sweeping apology – to 9/11 survivors, first responders, and victims' families; to our armed services; to Afghanistan war veterans and families of the fallen; and to our nation as a whole – for this appalling, disrespectful act. He must be held acountable for this disgrace.

Peace should and will one day come. Talks with our enemies are required. But we cannot legitimize and elevate the status of a deadly terrorist organization by hosting them on sacred American soil without at least concessions of a ceasefire first.
