Don't Send Dogs Back: Prosecute Every Cruelty Count in the Calvert County Kennel Case

Investigators in Calvert County, Maryland, found 31 dogs on a Huntingtown property on July 31, many kept in kennels filled with feces. Investigators also found more dogs in sheds at a second property in Port Republic, including 16 in one shed and 6 in another.

Three men were charged on August 26 with a combined 627 counts of animal cruelty, plus two breeding-facility license violations. The first preliminary hearings are scheduled for October 19 at Calvert District Court. Public reporting has not said whether anyone has pleaded or what happened to the dogs.

That last part is why I am writing. Seized dogs in cases like this are too often returned, or the charges are quietly narrowed once public attention fades.

The Calvert County State's Attorney can prevent that. I am asking the Calvert County State's Attorney to pursue every cruelty count and both license violations, to oppose any return of the seized dogs to the defendants, to seek forfeiture so the dogs can go to adopters, and to ask the court to bar the defendants from owning or breeding dogs if they are convicted.

I am Eric of I Love Every Dog. Every dog deserves a clean kennel, real food, and a family. Please sign, and I will deliver your name to the Calvert County State's Attorney before the October 19 hearing.
