Commute the Death Sentence of Jason Getsy

We, the undersigned and engaged Ohio residents, urge Governor Strickland to follow the recommendation of the Ohio Parole Board and commute the death sentence of Mr. Jason Getsy.

In 1995, Jason Getsy was sentenced to death, while the mastermind who had threatened and coerced Getsy into the crime received a sentence of 20-years-to-life imprisonment.  Two others also received similar life sentences.

Courts at every level, state and federal, have been troubled by the disproportionality of Getsy%u2019s sentence to that of the mastermind.  The federal courts, however, felt they did not have the authority to correct the sentence.

The Ohio Parole Board thoroughly investigated Jason Getsy%u2019s case, carefully considering arguments for and against granting clemency, and recommended granting Getsy clemency in a 5-2 decision.

We feel that the Governor should follow the Parole Board%u2019s recommendation.  We strongly urge Governor Strickland to now use his executive authority to commute Jason Getsy%u2019s death sentence and thus rectify the inequality of the sentences for this homicide.
