SAVE THE INDIAN ELEPHANT FROM TRAINS AND VILLAGERS

On the night of 22 September, 2010  7 elephants comprising two mothers, two calves and three adults were mowed down by a speeding freight train that was hurtling through the thick forest stretches at around 75 Kmph. The accident took place at night. Despite the instructions passed on to drivers not to go beyond a speed limit of 50 Kmp the engine drivers ignore this plea and take the trains at high speed. The Indian Ministry of  Railways have been requested by not only the Environment Ministry of the Govt of India but by forest officials, NGO's, animal lovers from all over the state of West Bengal and the country to reduce the speed of the trains, and to completely stop the running of trains at night on that particular route which passes through National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries that are homes to  hundreds of  species of animals apart from the elephant. And this is not the first time it has happened on this stretch. In 2010 alone, more than 29 elephants have been killed by trains. It is a tragedy that can be avoided but the railway authorities are completely ignoring the pleas of the forest officials and NGO's and animal lovers. The present minister in charge of the Railways is absolutely unconcerned about the wildlife that her speeding trains are harming. I would request everyone to write to the minister Ms Mamata Banerjee, Rail Bhawan, New Delhi or go directly to the Indian Railways website on the net to retrieve her e-mail address and write a petition requesting her to stop the night running of freight trains in North Bengal and ensure that trains do not travel in these vulnerable areas at more then 25 kmph till the stretch that comprises the elephant corridor is over. So I request all to sign the petition to endure the safety of the elephants in the region.

DANGER ON THE TRACKS                               Please save the Elephants from the Indian Railways
Hon'ble Minister for Railways,Rail Bhawan,NEW DELHI
Dear  ma'am, We the undersigned ask you to kindly review the speed of the trains that are passing through North Bengal. As you are aware by now that  a herd of 7 elephants  comprising two mothers, two calves and three adults were run over by a speeding train in the middle of the night of 22 September,2010 as they foraging for food on the tracks. The drivers of the trains have been instructed many times to travel at no more than 50 Kmp blowing their horns often. But this time, Ma'am, the callous driver ignored these instructions and mowed down these beautiful creatures without a thought. We request you, Hon'ble Minister,   to  completely  stop to the  running of trains at night through this stretch which is a wildlife sanctuary and a national park where hundreds of species of animals live apart from elephants. Kindly do not ignore our pleas as well as that of  the forest officials, the NGO's and thousands of wildlife lovers who expect you to look at the problem in a more humane way. Till date the number of elephants killed by trains has exceeded 29 for this year alone and almost 100 since the past five years. Elephants as well as other animals will continue to be crushed by the wheels of these trains if nothing is done to stop it. So I appeal to you again reduce the speed of the trains plying in North Bengal and completely ban the running of night trains. The future of the Indian elephant is in jeopardy if you do not  respond to the pleas of millions of animal lovers all over the country and the world.Thank you once again for taking off moments from your valuable time. We hope that you will do something to stop this terrible destruction of wildlife.
