Mandate Culturally Responsive Hair Care Training for Foster Parents

For children of color in the foster care system, hair care is a vital component of cultural identity and self-esteem. Unfortunately, many caregivers lack the technical knowledge to properly maintain African American hair textures, which can lead to physical discomfort, damage, and a sense of disconnection from a child's heritage.
We are calling on state licensing agencies to implement a mandatory, hands-on Culturally Responsive Hair Care curriculum for all foster and adoptive parents. This training should cover proper washing, detangling techniques, and protective styling. Every child deserves a caregiver equipped to honor and protect their beauty. By mandating this education, we ensure that children in care feel seen, respected, and properly cared for.
