Anne the Elephant - make sure the owners pay
The five day trial starts today for Circus owners Bobby & Moira Roberts, who are denying the charges of animal cruelty to their 59 year old Elephant, Anne. They let their groom beat her with a pitchfork and she was chained up for 24 hours a day. The poor animal had only a smattering of straw to lie in and wasn't even being given the appropriate medication for her arthritis. Thankfully Longleat gave her a new home and she has a huge enclosure now. The pitiful sight of her playing in her sandpit reduced me to tears. The owners should be held responsible for the cruelty inflicted on this defenceless creature.

Dear Sir/Madam
I am sending a petition with regards to Anne & Bobby Roberts, who let their groom abuse the last animal ever to be kept in a circus in the UK. Anne the elephant was 58 years old and was crippled with arthritis but the groom hit her with metal bars and a pitchfork. As the owners of the circus it is their reponsibility to know what is happening to their animals. Please don't let them off.
